Advances in on-train inspection of high-speed train wheels by means of the new generation of UFPE systems

Maximised safety, reliability, availability and economy are the main targets of the German Railway System (DB AG) for the operation of its rolling stock, specifically of the high-speed trains (ICE), taking into account the high dynamic loads on the components. For non-destructive examination, these aspects call for NDE systems that are able to reliably detect and evaluate eventual defects within the minimum feasible timeframe following a consequent stepwise schedule of inspection and maintenance activities.
