Summary In summary, for technology transfer to be successful, the following entities are needed: entrepreneurial managers, academics who can relate well to industry, proactive project champions (for example an EngD), dedicated resources with properly managed teams, a budget for equipment and protection from the day-to-day crises that affect manufacturing.The real bonus of the EngD is having someone who is focused on the project, has the time to work between both academia and industry, really gets to understand the science and what it can deliver and the industrial need and the context in which it can be applied. Without this focus and understanding, many projects are doomed to failure or at best very slow development. I plan to summarise my MBA findings in a later NDT News article, which hopefully you'll be able to show to your managers and explain what the best practice is for technology transfer and innovation.
