ONR Eyes Ground-Based Air Defense Laser Weapon For Tactical Vehicles

The Office of Naval Research wants industry help with an expeditionary laser weapon system to protect ground troops from drones, according to a notice issued by ONR last week. The project, formally called "Ground-Based Air Defense Directed Energy On-the-Move," is focused on the development of a vehicle-mounted system to protect Marine Air-Ground Task Force assets from incoming drones, as well as other air threats. The system would be small enough to fit atop a Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, the ONR announcement states. Early testing will be conducted on humvees.
