Austin promises new defense strategy, extensive reviews for Biden's DOD

Retired Army Gen. Lloyd Austin has committed to several key Defense Department reviews if confirmed as defense secretary and asserted his belief that military spending is unlikely to be increased in the near future. Austin, in written responses to advance policy questions posed by the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he intends to review the 2018 National Defense Strategy and "where necessary revise or update it" in the 2022 NDS that is required by law. The 2022 strategy, Austin said, will continue to focus on China and Russia as key strategic competitors of the United States.
