A Vision-based Approach For Sign-language Recognition Systems

In recent years, a large number of research initiatives have been triggered in the field of sign-language recognition as it offers great promise in providing an ideal communication framework within the deaf communities. The researchers in this domain have constantly strived to enhance the functionality of the sign language recognition systems by exploiting the potent techniques that are currently being deployed in the sphere of speech recognition. However, developing such a system, which can overcome the need for private databases and intelligently detect isolated signs or gestures still remains an unmet challenge for the developers. Moreover, a large majority of the existing systems, which make use of complex hardware continue to remain speaker-dependent. Hence, developing a robust sign-language recognition framework that adapts to the diverse ambient conditions in the industry remains an open challenge for the industry.
