While rigid electronics that are manufactured with close to 50 layers of intricately connected circuits can offer lot of functionality on a small footprint, they cannot be treated as wearable devices as it is rather difficult to place them on a body part as they are not stretchable and flexible. Stretchable electronics however face the common problem of compromising the electronic functionality as when the electronics are stacked and stretched the vertical interconnect accesses (VIA) that enable communication through holes in different circuits cannot be made on stretchable electronics. The VIAs are traditionally developed using lithography techniques and etching on rigid electronics, which however fail to provide the appropriate communication needed in stretchable electronics.
