According to recent figures from the International Diabetes Federation, there are a staggering 587 million people living in the world suffering from diabetes, which equates to 8.3% of the global population. With figures showing this is set to increase dramatically by a further 205 million by 2035, it's crucial that we find ways to reduce the onset of diabetes. There is increasing consensus that blood glucose management, as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, plays a role in this. Here, Antje Jungclaus PhD, Senior Manager Nutrition Communication, from BENEO discusses the importance of developing food alternatives with reduced glycaemic properties, in order to support consumers in their management of blood glucose levels. Human blood glucose regulation is a sensitive system that can become imbalanced overtime, if constantly challenged by high glucose loads in short succession. Consistently triggering an insulin response encourages ever increasing insulin releases and fat storage and can lead to a decrease in insulin sensitivity overtime, as well as a collapse in insulin production. Accordingly, having a high glycaemic diet, with its significant insulin demands, can lead to the onset of non-communicable diseases such as type Ⅱ diabetes and obesity.
