DOHNER VS. KOSTELLOW

Who is the father of American industrial design education? The desire to honor someone with the title of "father" for an important contribution to a profession, an invention or an activity is a common and admirable human endeavor. Yet many of these designations, if carefully examined, are given arbitrarily, and once bestowed, such attributions are often repeated as fact without further scrutiny. The submission of a second and more suitable candidate for the same honor can lead to great controversy despite factual documentation that would seem to bring any such debate to rest. Such is the case of Alexander J. Kostellow (1900-1954) and Donald R. Dohner (1892-1943) and the title of Father of American Industrial Design Education.
