With BEA On Board, Oracle Outlines App Server Strategy

In a tip of the hat to the company it acquired in April, Oracle plans to make BEA Systems' Web-Logic Application Server the centerpiece in its Fusion middleware line. Oracle will continue to develop its own Application Server, particularly for its E-Business Suite of applications, but the emphasis will shift to WebLogic as the strategic platform going forward, Oracle president Charles Phillips said in a July 1 Webcast. The decision illustrates why Oracle came back to BEA with a higher bid of $8.5 billion after its original of- fer was spurned. An early leader in the middleware market, BEA was quicker to adopt emerging technologies and make use of open source Eclipse innovations as well. BEA's JRockit Java Virtual Machine, one of the best-performing in the software industry, will be a key building block as Oracle tries to become a leading Java applications supplier. JRockit is noted for its built-in diagnostics, which pinpoint trouble spots that cause latencies in code execution. It comes with Mission Control tools that identify and eliminate memory leaks without introducing overhead, a performance issue for many Java applications. Oracle will continue to support other vendors' JVMs, including that of Sun Microsystems.
