Overall, companies resort to layoffs far too often and far too severely. I've gone home after both laying off people and after the heartbreak of being laid off myself from companies that I'd given my all for, which has given me at least some appreciation for why unions exist.rnIf used selectively, layoffs can be beneficial, especially at companies where large numbers of workers develop a feeling of entitlement and put themselves on performance "cruise control." For companies that think this is simply a routine tool that should be used every time revenue is down, it would be my wish that one or two of the high-level execs could experience the heartbreak of losing a job. No matter what, it's a tough issue.
