Recent Trends in Electronic Projection

Digital active-matrix liquid-crystal displays (AMLCDs) and digital-light-processing (DLP) projectors have rapidly created large non-consumer markets, but analog cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) continue to enable most of the world's electronic projection displays -principally for consumer rear-projection television. However, recent advances in the image quality, compactness, and cost-effectiveness of digital projectors have revolutionary implications for the major consumer and entertainment markets. Fueled by the advances made in imaging panels, light sources, and micro-optics, digital projection has improved at a rate from 5 to 12 times faster than analog CRT projectors and flat plasma-display panels (PDPs) from 1993 to 1999. With the continued rapid improvements that are expected, digital projection is likely to gain significant market share in the consumer HDTV market by 2005 and to dominate by 2010.
