With the dawn of Independence in 1947, the British left India, but they left behind the legacy of a large railway system which connected the important regions of India through a network of railways - the largest system in Asia, at the time. Later, the railway lines were extended and reorganised to serve the different regions of the country, under a Central Railway Board in Delhi. The officers had many privileges, the notable among them being the facility of travelling by saloon to any railway station of India on duty, or on transfer. Their wives and minor children could accompany them. Secondly, there was the facility of comfortable bungalows to live in.
