Under "Mission Zero accident" of Minister of Railways, Indian Railways has planned the development of an integrated network of wayside monitoring sites covering major transportation corridors across India. The running condition of a rolling stock vehicle is reflected in the state of the bearings, wheels and bogie. The damage that rolling stock vehicles do to track results from overloading, high wheel impact forces, poor wheel profile, poor bogie tracking and bearing failure-induced derailments. Monitoring rolling stock condition assists greatly in identifying high-risk operating rolling stock vehicles and enables proactive maintenance to occur, thereby reducing the incidence of operational failures.
