Indian Railways Institute of Transport Management (IRITM) was established at Lucknow in 1999 as a Centralized Training Institute to impart training to Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officers selected through Civil Services Examination. The Institute was also entrusted the responsibility of conducting academic-courses in Transportation Business for In-service Traffic officers and Multi-disciplinary courses for all Railway officers. The Foundation Stone of the Institute's Infrastructure was laid by the then Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 31st January, 2001 and the inauguration of the Infrastructure was also done by the then Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 21st May, 2003.
