BharatNet- A High Speed Broadband Highway

India is a country where almost 70% of its population lives in rural area. Despite the population density the Telecom Infrastructure in rural areas are not up to the standard which creates a huge digital divide between urban and rural India. With the aim to bridge this gap and make rural population digitally empowered, Government of India approved the setting up of National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN] as a national asset in the year 2011. The aim of NOFN was to provide broadband connectivity to 2,50,000 Gram Panchayats across country with adequate bandwidth to provide universal services to rural population. Later on the scope of the project was extended and also includes setting up of wi-fi and hotspots horizontally at each Gram Panchayat and the project name was changed to Bhartanet.
