North Eastern Railway came into existence on April 14, 1952 by merging Oudh Tirhut Railway, Assam Railway and the Fatehgarh district of Bombay Baroda and Central India Railway into a single unified system, with its headquarters at Gorakhpur. Subsequently for operational convenience, this Railway was divided into two zonal Railway systems viz. North East Frontier Railway and North Eastern Railway on January 15, 1958. Sonpur and Samastipur divisions of North Eastern Railway were merged with newly formed zone East Central Railway in the year 2002. Presently, North Eastern Railway has three divisions - Varanasi, Lucknow and Izatnagar and serves parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand with 505 stations on 3930 RKM.
