Relationship between USDA calibration cotton properties and yarn strength/unevenness

Nine cottons differing widely in fibre properties have been spun on a set of modern machinery to different counts ranging from 20s to 100s to establish the relationship between the fibre properties and the yarn strength/yarn unevenness. For assessing fibre properties, HVI (high volume instruments) test system and for assessing yarn properties, lea strength tester, single yarn strength tester and evenness tester were used. Two expressions, one for predicting Rkm value and the other for predicting yarn irregularity, from newer fibre length and strength parameters measured on HVI testing system using HVI test mode have been derived. The overall fibre quality in HVI mode has been found to be about 2.25 times of that obtained in ICC mode.
