Special confinement reinforcement in RC columns and shear walls

IS 13920 code on ductile detailing has not been revised since 1993. An equation is provided in IS 13920 to determine the area of one leg of the special confinement reinforcement in a column or wall section. A cross-tie needs to be provided in order to reduce the value of spacing 'h'. The ACI318 code has been revised in 2008. The ACI equation gives the total area of transverse reinforcement per unit height rather than the area of one leg only as is the case with IS 13920. ACI provides a different equation to determine lateral reinforcement in walls which is more economical. Based on the results presented in this paper, it can be concluded that there is a need to revise the clauses related to confinement of reinforcement for columns and shear walls in IS 13920 to make them clearer, economical and more user friendly for placement at site.
