Ferciment or ferrocement is essentially a precursor to reinforced concrete which is the most used construction material in the world. The main difference between them is in the scale of both the reinforcing element and the binder material. While reinforced concrete uses larger size bars and contains concrete with larger aggregates as binder, ferrocement uses wires or meshes and cement paste or mortar pressfilled in meshes. In other words, ferrocement is a type of thin reinforced concrete made of a cement-based matrix reinforced with closely spaced layers of relatively small diameter wire mesh. The mesh may be metallic or synthetic. Applications of ferrocement include marine and terrestrial structures such as boats, barges and monolithic or prefabricated housing.
