Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have tremendous applications in a variety of industrial and the public Internet of Things (IoT) where information can be delivered through embedded and networked devices. In this paper, we propose a new architecture underlining IoT realm and we implement a long-range (LoRa) wireless radio-based information display system. In particular, using the commercially available LoRa (TM), we develop WSN infrastructures by using microcontroller to manage the required data from and to a 3G gateway as well as the LoRa (TM) nodes. Meteorological information is crucial in various aspects of life, so is in the field of agriculture. Lack of access to good information technology infrastructure in the rural region of developing countries has deprived farmers of timely weather information and which can cause significant losses in production and economy. Thus, this paper describes our work on the real-time implementation of a LoRa-based network. The work is mainly intended for rural farmers of developing countries considering the realization of IoT, information and communication technology. The proposed system is able to wirelessly deliver well-timed and valuable information for farmers across the country to boost productivity and minimize needless wastes before, during and after the harvesting period. Furthermore, in this study we proved the functionality of the entire WSN infrastructure by testing data transmission-reception in a non-line of sight environment among the gateway and LoRa (TM) transceiver nodes considering both indoor-to-outdoor and outdoor-to-outdoor scenarios.
