Bandwidth Enhancement of Hexagonal Wide Slot Antenna Using a Tuning Stub

In this paper, a printed hexagonal wide slot antenna for bandwidth enhancement is proposed and experimentally investigated. The hexagonal slot is excited by a 50 Ω microstrip line with hexagonal tuning stub. A hexagonal slot excited by a simple 50 Ω microstrip line having a bandwidth of 470 MHz is considered as reference antenna. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed hexagonal wide slot antenna having 50 Ω microstrip line feed with hexagonal tuning stub exhibits 2:1 VSWR bandwidth of 1,751 MHz (1,921 to 3,672 MHz), which is about four times larger than the reference antenna. Obtained bandwidth is 62.63% with respect to center frequency. Based on these analyses, an empirical design equation and a polynomial equation are introduced to approximately determine the lower edge frequency of operating bandwidth. The impedance, radiation, and gain characteristics of the proposed antenna are studied and results exhibited accordingly.
