Software-Defined Wireless Protocol Stacks: Review of Design Methods and Tools

During the past twenty years, researchers have produced substantial work on software-defined implementation of physical layer functions. A software-defined approach to wireless protocol stacks is equally significant, but covered less in the literature. In this paper, we share our experience with the methods and tools that we found useful for the software implementation of protocol stacks on general-purpose processors.
