XSim: A New Method for Generating the Simulation Quotient of XML Documents in a Relational Database

The simulation quotient of an XML document is a structural summary of the document. Simulation quotients are based on automata theory and can be used to process queries on XML databases. They are useful for efficient processing of some kinds of XML queries, such as tree pattern queries and their variants. The main problem with handling simulation quotients of XML documents is generating and analyzing simulation quotients from XML documents. In this paper, we will introduce a novel method called XSim to map the simulation quotient onto relational tables. This mapping method can reduce the amount of main memory required to store intermediate results necessary for generating the simulation quotient. These two tables can also be used to analyze various feature values of the simulation quotient of XML documents.
