Flexible-manufacturing systems (FMSs) may comprise a number ofnworkcells where production resources are shared among the workcells forna variety of practical reasons. Although the utilization of independentnworkcells with sharing resources improves the flexibility of FMSs,navoiding deadlocks is essential for their successful implementation.nThis paper introduces a novel methodology for the synthesis of a set ofnconflict- and deadlock-free supervisors to individually control everynworkcell within a FMS inter-related by common (shared) resources. Thenproposed methodology is based on Extended Moore Automata (EMA) andnControlled-Automata theories. A new algorithmic procedure to analyze thenconcurrent operation of supervisors is also introduced in order to checknfor the existence or absence of deadlock states
