摘要

Research and development (R&D) — exploring a scientific concept in an organized, systematic way in order to gain new or additional knowledge; then applying this knowledge in a constructive way, i.e., creating a prototype or product design that produces visible change or creates a profitable product. An appealing description of your job goal? Then join the thousands of graduates who apply every year for positions in this area. It is a field that allows independence and the chance to use one's creative abilities and intelligence to the fullest. However, the competition is tough, and the percentage of applicants hired can seem scary. According to Peterson's Guide to Engineering, Science, and Computer Jobs 1982, in a random sampling, only 1 to 10 percent of the applications received by prospective employers resulted in offers.
