Two-dimensional arrays of vertical-cavity semiconductor lasersnwere prepared by mirror patterning. The size of the laser elements ofnthe array was tapered according to the Hermite polynomial zeros, innorder to achieve a multilobed far-field pattern, e.g., for applicationsnas an array illuminator. Injecting short current pulses (~100 ns) to thenN×N Hermite tapered vertical-cavity semiconductor laser arraynresulted in the lasing of anti-phase supermodes, similar to supermodesnof uniform size but (N+2)×(N+2) laser arrays. Excitation by a longnpulse resulted in a supermode localized on the larger elements of thenarray-exhibiting the desired multilobed far-field intensitynpattern
