The semiclassical theory for gas lasers is extended from onendimension into three. Self-consistency equations of a rectangularnwaveguide resonator and the component equations of motion for thenpopulation matrix are derived. Laser parameters related to the waveguidenstructure and active medium are analyzed by solving the equations. Fornhomogeneously broadened lasers, theoretical investigation shows thatnsingle-mode operation depends on the waveguide dimensions, the mostnprobable speed of the active medium, and the decay constants or thensaturation parameter. Under some conditions, the oscillating modes cannbe determined by the frequency interval and the relativenexcitation
