Domains of existence of the main resonances in directly modulatednsemiconductor lasers are obtained by application of quasi-conservationntheory. The predictions are compared with numerical results coming fromna direct integration of the model equations and with experimentalnobservations reported by other groups. In both cases we find anqualitative good agreement. We consider a model that contains explicitlynthe gain saturation and spontaneous emission terms. We find that thenspontaneous emission strongly modifies the qualitative behavior of theninstabilities boundaries, while the gain saturation leads to a simplenquantitative shift of boundaries. We also find that modulation of thenpump or loss produce equivalent results if the respective modulationnamplitudes are conveniently rescaled
