A Theoretic System for Unified Linguistics: An Introduction

A major challenge to machine translation and cross-lingual applications is the lack of correspondence relationships among characters, words, or grammars of different languages, unless they are homological. This Expert Opinion article reviews a theory based on semantic units and their representation to address this challenge. Semantic units share the same meaning across languages. The proposed unified linguistics theory built on top of semantic units has the potential to greatly simplify natural language processing with rich semantics. This theory was initially proposed by Qingshi Gao and his colleagues in a sequence of papers while they worked at the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
