THE LOW-COST, SHORT TERM PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS TO REDUCE THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN URBAN AREAS CASE STUDY: JAKARTA METROPOLITAN AREA

摘要

Following rapid urbanization, traffic congestion is the principal urban transportation problem facing the Jakarta Metropolitan Area as the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia. This problem could be caused by four important reasons, i.e :1 The decreasing share of public transportation causing rapid growth of the number of vehicles; 2.Low level in existing public transportation; 3.Lack of road and street network; 4. Inconvenient urban structure for public transportation. This paper discuss low-cost, short term public transportation improvement alternatives to solve the problem, based on analyses of the present conditions in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area.
