Copy Cataloguing and National Library

摘要

National Library is playing its role in maintaining the cultural heritage of the country and providing access to its resources. It is now preparing its online database and going for retrospective conversion to reach bibliographical information to all corners of the world. This paper explains the concept of copy cataloguing and its benefits based on the author's experience in New York Public Library and suggests that the National Library should take a leading role in organizing online copy cataloguing programme in India so that all libraries in the country can use its bibliographical information to prepare their catalogues without wasting unnecessary money and manpower. This copy cataloguing programme could provide member libraries the facilities of downloading required data from a central database, editing the data to meet the local needs and printing the cards as required. All member libraries will be able to maintain stamlard catalogue, can benefit from the contributions of experienced cataloguers by paying a reasonable membership fee and thus librarians will get more time for user service.
