Library and Information Science Research Landscape in India

摘要

Teaching of library and information science at university level in India started in 1937 in the University of Madras by Dr Ranganathan. The first doctorate degree in US education was awarded at the University of Delhi under Dr Ranganathan in 1957. During the last two decades number of US schools increased to nearly two hundred now; as a result there has been a corresponding high increase in Ph D degree holders within the discipline. According to data (incomplete) available with INFUBNET 595 doctorate degrees were awarded by different Indian universities till 2008 in LIS. Qualitative analysis of the dissertations has not been attempted. In addition, presented an over all view on the trends of research activities by individual US professionals, as reflected in LISA; and expressed a significant gap in any coordinated project based research policy at the national level.
