Storage and Retrieval of Multimedia Resources in Multimedia Libraries: A Study

Purpose: The present study is to bring a light on the various methods of storage and retrieval of multimedia resources and their contribution to the users in five different multimedia libraries viz. Asia News International (ANI) - TV Archive; Prasar Bharati Archives (PBA), Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum (EGMM), National School of Drama (NSD) - Audio Video Library and Sangeet Natak Academi Museum and Library. The study also focuses on the various facilities provided for the management and organization of multimedia resources available in the aforementioned libraries. Methodology: For the present study, the method of survey has been adopted wherein the help of questionnaires followed by interviews of the librarians has been taken to bring out the clarity in the subject. Analysis of the data collectedfrom multimedia libraries is done and the observations have been described with the help of Tables.Findings : There are various physical storage devices in the libraries. Hard Disc, Magnetic Tapes, Compact Disc, DVDs. Different softwares for different type of resources are being used by different libraries. In regard to the softwares used for automation of resources, the data reveals that most of the libraries are using commercial library software called LIBSYS-4. TIFF, JPEG/JPG/JIF, and PNG are mostly used image formats. MP3/MP4, MPEG and WAV are audio/video formats which are mostly subscribed by libraries for storage of their audio-video resources.Originality/Value: This study is beneficial to users of multimedia resources and it is also helpful to multimedia libraries for enhancement of their library resources and services.
