Hindi in Information Retrieval: Issues and Challenges for Developing a Computational Model

Purpose: The present paper aims to study the development of Hindi language in a computational system. There are a number of technologies that have been developed to promote the Hindi language in the fields of information science and ICT. Many search engines that provide Hindi searching and translational tools, that translate other languages into Hindi are available. The present study is centralized to sort out the problems of Hindi language in a computational system. Design/methodology/approach: Literature review has been done by systematically collecting the existing literature on the topic and classifying them on the basis of development, improvement in the area, problem context, methodology and results under consideration. Different institutional websites are analyzed tofind out complexities of the Hindi language.Findings: A number of techniques and search engines have been developed to facilitate Hindi text searching, but many inaccuracies still arise in the search results. One of the dominant problems appearing while searching in Hindi arises when a text formed by combinatorial characters or words is searched. Still, the technologies are in their infancies and complexities do exist with the Hindi language in the field of computers. Originality/value: The paper is an original work and is not published before anywhere. The present study is limited to find out the developments, issues and future scope of the Hindi language in computational system.
