Most hydroelectric powerhouses use grease for bearing lubrication. In general, grease is made from lubricating oil, a thickener, and various lubricating additives. The basic purpose of grease is to hold lubricating oil in a semi-fluid state so that it does not run out of the bearing too quickly. Some thickeners are formulated to release by heat, while some release over time. Thickeners are available to resist water washout, while some will be water soluble. The basic problem with thickeners is that they sometimes release the lubricating oil too soon and can plug up bearings, fittings, lube lines, and lubrication systems.
