Mercer's latest analysis of CEO compensation finds CEO total pay increased at a median rate of 4.7% in 2018, reaching a median value of $12.1 million. Median 2018 revenues for these companies were $13.3 billion. This analysis is based on 100 companies in the S&P 500 that filed fiscal year 2018 proxies by April 1, 2019. All elements of CEO pay increased year over year. Both short-term incentives (STI) earned and long-term incentives (LTI) granted grew 7.5% at the median in 2018, while base salaries increased 0.6% at the median. Short-term incentive payouts continue to exceed targets. CEO STI payouts reflected strong financial performance in 2018, with year-over-year median growth in revenue and EBITDA of roughly 10 percent, and median net income growth of almost 20 percent. The median 2018 actual STI was 125 percent of target-the highest in the past five years-with a median payout of nearly $2.2 million. The prevalence of companies paying STI at or above target has remained high with 77 percent of CEOs receiving STI payouts at or above target in 2018.
