Accommodating Australians

As its subtitle informs, Accommodating Australians is a history of Australia's commonwealth (i.e. federal) government involvement in housing policy and practice. From this perspective, it focuses mainly on the period from 1945 when a national approach to shaping Australia's residential development first emerged. The book is, in part, a factual history of post-war federal and state policy-making in the housing and planning arenas. Here it draws substantially on ministerial policy statements, officially commissioned reviews and public commitments by the main political parties. It is also informed by detailed archival research, as well as by the author's direct experience at the heart of urban policy-making under the reformist Whitlam government of the 1970s.
