This volume presents the results of an interdisciplinary symposium concerning "Body-image-Collection of objects - Creation of monuments. Rituals of death and the cult of graves in early societies", which took place at the University of Tuebingen in 2004. In 22 articles the possibilities and limits of cultural and archaeological studies are discussed from the perspectives of different archaeological disciplines. As a central archaeological category of sources grave-contexts build the centre. Here they are not analysed as an expression of social differences, but as a medium of communication and instrument of collective sense-making.
