Without a doubt, renewable energy sources such as biomass and solar energy are at the top of many sustainability agendas, driven both by emissions targets and Building Regulations. In relation to heating systems, the biggest challenge is to get them working together, particularly when the renewable element varies on a daily or even hourly basis. This is certainly the case with solar thermal systems, as solar irradiation levels in the UK can range from less than 100wh/sq metre of collection area on a cloudy day, to over 1000wh/sq metre on a sunny day.
