Workers at indoor workplaces frequently suffer complaints that they attribute to the room air being too dry. The available information on the actual, medically proven effects of dry air upon health is in some cases highly inconsistent. An up-to-date literature review was to identify the latest scientific findings on this topic. It focuses on the influence of dry indoor air on the skin, eyes and mucous membranes of the respiratory tract of workers at indoor workplaces, and the transmission of pathogenic germs in these areas. The analysis showed the effects of a dry atmosphere to be associated in particular with skin health and the activity of viruses. The scientific findings currently available do not constitute a suitable basis either for the setting of minimum values for indoor air humidity, or for the issuing of general recommendations for the humidifying of air at indoor workplaces during the winter months.
