The guidelines and codes of practice that en-sure safety in the downstream oil industry are under constant review. One of the more important sources of information is the London-based Energy Institute (EI), formerly the Institute of Petroleum, which has recently issued three new publications that reflect changes in the ways that fuels are distributed and new regulations that have been introduced lately. To comply with EC Directive 2003/17/EC, three new product grades have been introduced to the fuel distribution system. As a result, EI has issued a fifth edition of the Code of Practice for a Product Identification System for Petroleum Products, which meets the substance labelling and marking requirements of the UK Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 and the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR).
