Maintaining security over the entire length of a pipeline is a difficult proposition. There will be few, if any, manned facilities along the length of the line, and it may pass through remote or dangerous zones. Such is the case with the Europe-Maghreb pipeline, which supplies natural gas from Algeria to markets in Europe. The line runs for more than 2,000 km from gas fields in Algeria, through Morocco, across the Straits of Gibraltar and into Spain and Portugal. It is a strategically important line but one that can easily be seen as being vulnerable to terrorist action.
