Ammonia is a vital constituent of fertilisers, explosives and some illegal drugs. It is also poisonous and potentially flammable. New guidance from EFMA offers help in shipping large volumes safely by rail. More than 1.5m tonnes of ammonia is carried each year on Europe's railways; almost all of this reaches its destination and is offloaded safely. However, occasional accidents do occur and, while there have been no casualties reported in such accidents in Europe for many decades, the potential exists for a serious incident to take place if safety measures are not properly observed.
