Large LNG One of the hottest topics at the Gastech conference was the trend towards ever larger LNG ships. Two papers considered some of the design challenges inherent in building these giants and the possible problems regarding their financing. Successive conferences on the topic of LNG have focused heavily on ways of engineering costs out of the supply chain. Taking the oil tanker business as a model, it is obvious that larger ships have economies of scale that can make a major contribution towards cost savings. However, their employment possibilities are clearly constrained by existing jetty capacities and there are other technical considerations that have held back a move towards larger ships.
