It is not too late for changes to be made to the European regulations that will come into effect in January 2009 and the last joint meeting took that opportunity. However, the growing use of ADR outside the EU and the EU's own legislative programme are beginning to cause conflicts in terms of applying the regulations The UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) Working Parry on rhe Transport of Dangerous Goods (WP15) and the RID Committee of Experts held their first joint meeting of 2008 in Bern this past March 25 to 28. These bodies are responsible for developing and maintaining the regulations governing the transport of dangerous goods by road (ADR), rail (RID) and inland waterway (ADN) in Europe; the regulations are also used by a number of other countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The experts' task was to discuss recommendations for amending the current texts, which would subsequently be discussed by plenary sessions of WP15 and the RID experts for adoption. The meeting was chaired by Claude Pfau-vadel (France) with Helmut Rein (Germany) as vice-chairman. Representatives from 26 states attended, along with those from the European Commission (EC), the European Railway Agency (ERA), the Organisation for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD) and 15 non-governmental organisations representing various branches of industry.
