LNG shipping is usually associated with vast energy projects in which the shipping element is an expensive and crucial means of shuttling product between multi-billion dollar landside projects shipping is a link in the chain rather than the prime mover. Nevertheless, a $200m-plus price tag on a new LNG carrier means that vessel construction can usually only be secured with a long-term charter in place. After all, the LNG vessel only has one use - to ship LNG. That rather fixed view of how the LNG segment works is changing fast. LNG shipping now has spot market and the sector is diversifying further with LNG-fuelled vessels and a new arrival: the multi-gas carrier.
