Observations about Contemporary Design Pedagogy: The GSD Studioscope Conference

Is the design studio still the mostrnrelevant and successful way to teach design? Richard Sommer, Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, organized Studioscope, an April 2007 conference at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) to address this perennial question from the contested territory between the academy and practice.rnUnlike previous efforts to grapple with this issue, these presentations and discussions had more punch based on a new difference: Mainstream practice has completely embraced digital representation, while the academy still includes hand drawing in its foundation curriculum.
