Visible smoke has recently become a major issue in the marine market, especially for cruise and passenger vessels. As most harbours in the world are located close to densely populated areas the demand for no visible smoke engines will become increasingly important. At least by advertising, Waertsilae NSD started a campaign for the smokeless engine first, although MAN B&W argued strongly against it immediately after the first advertisements were published. Waertsilae NSD claimed early this year: »Bringing out the best in dieselelectric power - the smokeless solution is coming over the horizon.« MAN B&W argued against it: »Smokeless die-sel engines are technically impossible« (see HANSA 4/2000, page 50) and explained more detailed, that only »Invisi-ble Smoke« (IS) can be reached, what they did already years ago. The German point of view regarding exhaust emissions from diesel engines was presented in HANSA 4/2000, page 36-40. Daniel Paro, Group Vice President Waertsilae NSD, came up with the Finnish view a month later.
