Latest Super-Panamax cruise ships (90,000 GT) need up to 60 MW power to be run under maximum conditions of speed up to 24 kn and full hotel electricity. Two third of this power might be used under full speed of the ship by the propellers and one third remains for the hotel requirements. On conventional medium-sized Ro-Pax-ferries (40,000 GT) with a limited number of less than 1,000 passengers on board and cruising under a maximum speed of 22 kn only 30 MW might be necessary, of which also two third is needed for propulsion and only one third by the hotel arrangement. It can be taken for sure that the total power needed on board is basically generated by diesel engines as prime movers. The big question mark of the best arranged total engine plant comes just behind each motor on board, in respect of part-load running of these prime movers with their environmental behaviour and consequently fuel consumption as well as flexibility of covering all power needs onboard the vessel under various and quickly changing needs.
