For several applications so-called rim drives have become more and more attractive for rudder propellers and thrusters. At the SMM 2012 Schottel presented for the first time a program of rim drives up to 800 kW and Voith Turbo the largest version at all useable for a power transmission of 1,500 kW. In Germany the business with rim drives was launched on the basis of new material by AIR Fertigung-Technologie in the 1990s. Voith had taken over step by step this company and further developed the program including the rim drives, being now the market leader with this products. Before the takeover AIR was co-operating with Van der Velden in the Netherlands. This company is now co-operating on rim drives with Schottel as sales partner for applications on inland waterway vessels and yachts. Schottel will redesign the whole program within the next years, starting with a 200-kW-model.%In den letzten zehn Jahren sind verschiedene Ausführungen sogenannter Rim-Antriebe auf den Markt gekommen. Im Fall der neuartigen elektrischen Schiffsantriebe mit Propellern ohne Nabe und ohne Welle w?re für den eigentlichen Antrieb das passende Wort wohl Ringmotor.
